چکیده

"Evidence concerning the absorption of light quanta by visual pigment molecules is used to derive a theoretical relationship between the parameters of light incident on the retina and the output of the receptor cells. This relationship leads to the following prediction: when two retinal areas are illuminated, one very intensely and the other still more intensely, there will be a period of time during which the less intensely illuminated region will appear brighter than the more intensely illuminated one. Data verifying this prediction are presented. When the theoretical treatment is expanded to include certain assumptions about retinal color mechanisms, it provides an explanation of some of the changes in hue that occur when a very intense colored stimulus is viewed steadily." The influence of contrast adaptation on color appearance.

Most models of color vision assume that signals from the three classes of cone receptor are recoded into only three independent post-receptoral channels: one that encodes luminance and two that encode color. Stimuli that are equated for their effects on two of the channels should be discriminable only to the remaining channel, and are thus assumed to isolate the responses of single channels. We...

Influence of adaptation state and stimulus luminance on peri-saccadic localization.

Spatial localization of flashed stimuli across saccades shows transient distortions of perceived position: Stimuli appear shifted in saccade direction and compressed towards the saccade target. The strength and spatial pattern of this mislocalization is influenced by contrast, duration, and spatial and temporal arrangement of stimuli and background. Because mislocalization of stimuli on a backg...

Neurons in primary visual cortex represent distribution of luminance

To efficiently detect a wide range of light-intensity changes, visual neurons must adapt to ambient luminance. However, how neurons in the primary visual cortex (V1) code the distribution of luminance remains unknown. We designed stimuli that represent rapid changes in luminance under different luminance distributions and investigated V1 neuron responses to these novel stimuli. We demonstrate t...

Neural Mechanism for Sensing Fast Motion in Dim Light

Luminance is a fundamental property of visual scenes. A population of neurons in primary visual cortex (V1) is sensitive to uniform luminance. In natural vision, however, the retinal image often changes rapidly. Consequently the luminance signals visual cells receive are transiently varying. How V1 neurons respond to such luminance changes is unknown. By applying large static uniform stimuli or...

Effects of luminance contrast on the color selectivity of neurons in the macaque area v4 and inferior temporal cortex.

Appearance of a color stimulus is significantly affected by the contrast between its luminance and the luminance of the background. In the present study, we used stimuli evenly distributed on the CIE-xy chromaticity diagram to examine how luminance contrast affects neural representation of color in V4 and the anterior inferior temporal (AITC) and posterior inferior temporal (PITC) color areas (...

Stress and Perception of Emotional Stimuli: Long-term Stress Rewiring the Brain

Introduction: Long-term stressful situations can drastically influence one’s mental life. However, the effect of mental stress on recognition of emotional stimuli needs to be explored. In this study, recognition of emotional stimuli in a stressful situation was investigated. Four emotional conditions, including positive and negative states in both low and high levels of arousal were analy...
